Vieira de Sousa wine dinner
We’re very excited to announce our next wine dinner will be all about wines from Portugal’s Douro Valley!
On Wednesday 6 November, we’ll be hosting sisters Luisa and Maria Vieira de Sousa of Vieira de Sousa winery, who have resurrected the family’s port wine production business that began five generations ago.
Vieira de Sousa once sold high-quality grapes to household names like Churchill’s and Taylor’s. However, the business was forced into a hiatus after phylloxera hit the vineyards in the 19th century, which froze the business for more than 100 years and resulted in the family having to sell some of their vineyards and the brand name.
In 2009 Luisa, helped by her father Antonio, decided to invest in port bottling again and buy back the family name.
With their remaining 60 hectares across five farms, they were still able to provide high-quality grapes to restart the business, and their Cimo Corgo-based Quinta homestead was ideally placed to process the output.
From the hardscrabble slopes they have been producing incredible quality Portuguese wines in recent years using native grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Roriz, Rabigato, Viosinho and Gouveio.
Viticulture in the Douro is always a struggle, with limited public services, low-yielding old vines and machinery not developed for such steep terraces. Yet from this difficult terrain, with a lot of work and dedication, they still manage to make beautiful wines and benchmark ports which, while rustic, have a beautiful freshness, elegance and lower than usual levels of residual sugar. We can’t wait for you to taste them.
The dinner is going to be £150 per person including coffee and tea, a selection of dishes paired to complement the wines, and of course the wines and service. We’re expecting this to be a popular event, and our wine dinners often sell out quickly, so secure your seat by dropping us an email with your phone number at info@greyhoundbeaconsfield.co.uk.
